I've been struggling recently with how (in design) do you go about about representing something without choosing the obvious and done-to-death option yet not go so far out of orbit that your piece (logo etc) no longer has any relevance whatsoever to the thing to be represented. It's a bloody tricky balance to find. (Especially when you are doing the exact same projects that last decades third years have done and all potential employers have already seen ten thousand times before *coughunigetnewprojectscough*)
Anyway - True Blood and Dexter.
The reason their titles are so awesome is because they have nailed that balance. They don't go straight for the obvious yet they capture the feel of the show perfectly.
True Blood for instance doesn't show any vampires, steaks, wooden crosses or any cliche vampire images at all. Instead you get roadkill and children in Klu Klux Klan-esq outfits. And the titles for dexter are about as far from CSI as you can get. Who would've of thought that breakfast could be so disturbingly terrifying?
Granted both shows are also rather original in themselves and whoever got the job of creating the titles certainly had some interesting concepts to work with. But still.
Here's hoping I can find that balance one day.

WOn't you come for a holiday?

You can come when Green Day is here next year! 14th January 2010.
